House Bill 4771 (as passed by the House) Sponsor: Representative Clyde LeTarte

House Committee: Senior Citizens and Veterans Affairs

Senate Committee: Human Resources, Labor and Veterans Affairs

Date Completed: 2-6-96

CONTENT

The bill would amend Public Act 192 of 1953, which allows a county board of commissioners to create a county department of veterans’ affairs under the administration of a committee of veterans, to increase the number of committee members from four to five by adding a member who had served in the Persian Gulf War. (Currently, a county veterans committee is composed of one veteran each of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam Conflict.) The bill also provides that a committee would have to consist of “3 to 5" veterans.

In addition, the Act specifies that when a veteran of World War I who is willing to serve on the committee cannot be found, a veteran of any war may fill that position. The bill provides, instead, that if a notice of an opening on a veterans committee were provided by the county board of commissioners to one or more newspapers and to veteran service organizations within the county, and a veteran of a particular war or conflict who was willing to serve on the committee could not be located, a veteran of any war could be appointed to serve on the committee.
