CONTENT

The bill would amend Chapter 84 of the Revised Judicature Act, which governs the small claims division of the district court (small claims court), to provide that, upon a showing that service of process could not reasonably be made as currently required, the court could, by order, permit service of process to be made in any other manner reasonably calculated to give the defendant actual notice of the proceedings and an opportunity to be heard. Currently, service of process in the small claims court must be made upon the defendant by certified mail or by personal service.
