House Bill 6167 (as reported without amendment) Sponsor: Representative Jan Dolan

House Committee: Tax Policy Senate Committee: Finance

CONTENT

The bill would amend the Property Tax Limitation Act to provide that if a previous millage increase were about to expire, and a new increase for the identical amount levied in the preceding year, or a lesser amount, were proposed, the millage proposal on the ballot could be presented as a renewal or a continuation of the previous increase for a specified number of years. Currently, under the Act, a millage ballot proposal may be presented as a renewal or continuation only if the proposed new increase is for the identical amount of the millage that is about to expire.

Currently, if a local unit holds an election for the approval or disapproval of a millage increase, the ballots must state the amount to be increased in dollars per thousand of State equalized valuation (SEV). The bill would require the ballots to state the amount in dollars per thousand of taxable value.
