A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5700 AS INTRODUCED 3-17-98

House Bill 5700 would amend the State School Aid Act to increase the fiscal year 1998-99 appropriation to education from the general fund by $75 million. Under the bill, the money would be allocated to the intervention/prevention grant program, and it would be used to provide grants to districts for locally designed, innovative programs that target juvenile crime. The bill specifies that any grant funding to a district under this program would be in addition to funding under Section 31a of the act, the provision that provides additional money for eligible districts that serve poor children and their families who are at academic risk.

House Bill 5700 is tie-barred to 13 bills addressing the subject of violence in schools.
