A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5722 AS INTRODUCED 3-31-98

House Bill 5722 would amend the Revised School Code to allow a school district to levy not more than three additional mills for enhancing operating revenue if approved by the school electors. An expired provision in current law allowed districts to enhance their local millage in this manner for 1994 through 1996. Under this bill, those dates would be deleted and the restriction would be lifted.

The bill also would repeal section 705 of the code (MCL 380.705), the section that allows an intermediate school district to levy a regional property tax of up to three mills (for a term not to exceed 20 years) to enhance other state and local funding, if approved by the intermediate school district electors.
