A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5840 AS INTRODUCED 5-12-98

The K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base Conversion Authority was created by Public Act 159 of 1993 (Senate Bill 763), which went into effect on September 13, 1993. The act allows the governor to appoint an 11-member authority, which was to exist for five years, with one additional five-year extension if authorized by concurrent resolution of the legislature. The authority, which includes representatives of local government, business, and labor, manages conversion of the military base to civilian use.

House Bill 5840 would amend the act to provide that the base conversion authority would exist until September 13, 2003, and would eliminate the language that allows for a five-year extension if authorized by concurrent resolution of the legislature.
