A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 6293 AS INTRODUCED 11-10-98

House Bill 6293 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to require the secretary of state to suspend drivers' licenses for between 30 and 90 days if owners of vehicles failed to pay accrued towing and storage fees on their vehicles. Under current law, the towing and storage bond posted with a court is used to cover unpaid towing and storage fees. Under House Bill 6293, that bond would continue to cover unpaid fees. In addition the court would be required to advise the secretary of state if the owner failed to pay the fees, and after receiving notice, the secretary of state would be required to suspend the vehicle owner's operator or chauffeur license.
