Sponsor: Senator Harry Gast
Committee: Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs
Date Completed: 2-21-97
CONTENT
The bill would amend Part 401 (Wildlife Conservation) of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act to provide that, before issuing an order for the taking of game, the Natural Resources Commission would have to provide a copy of the order to the chairperson of each standing committee of the Senate or House of Representatives that considered legislation pertaining to conservation, the environment, recreation, tourism, or natural resources. The standing committees would have 60 days to review the order and submit comments to the Commission.
(Under Part 401, as amended by Public Act 377 of 1996, the Natural Resources Commission has the exclusive authority to regulate the taking of game in this State. The Commission must, to the greatest extent practicable, use principles of sound scientific management in making decisions regarding the taking of game. Orders are to be made by the Commission following a public meeting and an opportunity for public input. Public Act 377 appeared as Proposal G on the November 1996 ballot and was approved by the voters.)
