S.B. 663: ENROLLED ANALYSIS - "VETERANS MEMORIAL BRIDGES"

Senate Bill 663 (as enrolled) - PUBLIC ACT 256 of 1998

Sponsor: Senator Leon Stille

Senate Committee: Transportation and Tourism

House Committee: Transportation

Date Completed: 7-21-98

RATIONALE

The Veterans Memorial Park causeway within the Cities of Muskegon and North Muskegon contains 2,000 bronze plaques, purchased by a family member or a friend, honoring veterans who have served in the armed forces or merchant marines. The Veterans Memorial Park also includes a lagoon, an island, a fountain, and benches along the parkway. Reportedly, the West Michigan Veterans Services Center requested that the two bridges over Cedar Creek by the Veterans Memorial Park causeway be named the "Veterans Memorial Bridges", and the Muskegon County Road Commission already has set aside funds to purchase and install suitable bridge designation markers. Some people thus suggested that the highway bridges be statutorily named the "Veterans Memorial Bridges" to memorialize the veterans from their community.

CONTENT

The bill created a new act to provide that the bridges on highway M-120 over Cedar Creek by the Veterans Memorial Park causeway within the Cities of Muskegon and North Muskegon, are known as "Veterans Memorial Bridges".

Supporting Argument

The bill allows the two bridges over Cedar Creek by the Veterans Memorial Park causeway within Muskegon and North Muskegon to be known as the "Veterans Memorial Bridges" to recognize and honor the 17,000 veterans from their community. The tribute acknowledges both the 12,000 veterans who served the United States as soldiers during war, and the 5,000 veterans who served in times of peace.
