HOUSE BILL No. 5237 October 7, 1997, Introduced by Rep. Law and referred to the Committee on Education. A bill to amend 1941 PA 207, entitled "Fire prevention code," by amending section 19 (MCL 29.19). THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT: 1 Sec. 19. (1) The chief administrative officer and the 2 teachers of all schools, including state supported schools, col- 3 leges, and universities and the owner, or owner's representative, 4 of all school dormitories shall have a fire drill each month and 5 keep all doors and exits unlocked during school hours, and when 6 the school is open to the public. Each teacher in a school, 7 including a state supported school, college, or university and 8 the owner or owner's representative of a dormitory shall comply 9 with these requirements and keep a record of the drills. 10 (2) A minimum of 10 drills is required for each school 11 year.However, ifIF weather conditions will not permit fire 03511'97 VPW 2 1 drills to be held at least once a month, then at least 6 fire 2 drills shall be held in the fall of each year and 4 fire drills 3 shall be held during the remaining part of the school year. TWO 4 OF THE 10 REQUIRED DRILLS SHALL BE SHELTER IN-PLACE DRILLS. 5 (3) The state fire marshal or the chief of the fire depart- 6 ment or a fire fighter in uniform acting under orders and direc- 7 tions of the fire chief,may cause fire drills to be held in 8 school houses, school dormitories, and other public buildings as 9 the state fire marshal considers advisable.
