SENATE BILL NO. 1064

A bill to amend 1964 PA 208, entitled "An act to grant scholarships to students enrolled in postsecond- ary education institutions; and to provide for the administration of the scholarship program," by amending section 7 (MCL 390.977), as amended by 1980 PA 500. THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT: 1 Sec. 7. (1) An applicant awarded a first-year scholarship 2 or a renewal scholarship shall not be restricted in the choice of 3 the institution in this state which THAT he or she desires to 4 attend if the institution is approved by the state board of 5 education. HOWEVER, A SCHOLARSHIP SHALL NOT BE AWARDED TO AN 6 APPLICANT IF THE INSTITUTION HE OR SHE ATTENDS IS NOT IN COMPLI- 7 ANCE WITH THE TAXPAYER-FUNDED ABORTION PROHIBITION ACT. An appli- 8 cant awarded a first-year scholarship or a renewal scholarship 9 shall not be restricted in the choice of the course of study he 10 or she wishes to pursue, except that a scholarship award shall 04207'97 e CPD 2 1 not be made to a student enrolled in a program of study leading 2 to a degree in theology, divinity, or religious education. 3 (2) An approved institution chosen by the applicant shall 4 not be required to accept the applicant for enrollment, or once 5 having admitted the applicant, to continue the applicant's 6 enrollment. The approved institution accepting the enrollment of 7 a state competitive scholarship award winner shall notify the 8 authority of the recipient's enrollment and shall submit annually 9 to the authority reports which THAT are required and necessary 10 to administer this act. 11 Enacting section 1. This amendatory act does not take 12 effect unless Senate Bill No. 1060 13 of the 89th Legislature is enacted into 14 law. 04207'97 e Final page. CPD
