A joint resolution proposing an amendment to the state con- stitution of 1963, by amending section 54 of article IV, to increase the maximum number of terms of certain state officers. Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the state of Michigan, That the following amendment to the state con- stitution of 1963, to increase the maximum number of terms of certain state officers, is proposed, agreed to, and submitted to the people of the state: 1 ARTICLE IV 2 Sec. 54. No person shall be elected to the office of state 3 representative more thanthreeFOUR CONSECUTIVE times. No 4 person shall be elected to the office of state senate more than 5 two CONSECUTIVE times. Any person appointed or elected to fill a 6 vacancy in the house of representatives or the state senate for a 7 period greater than one half of a term of such office, shall be 04831'97 JLB 2 1 considered to have been elected to serve one time in that office 2 for purposes of this section. This limitation on the number of 3 times a person shall be elected to office shall apply to terms of 4 office beginning on or after January 1, 1993. 5 This section shall be self-executing. Legislation may be 6 enacted to facilitate operation of this section, but no law shall 7 limit or restrict the application of this section. If any part 8 of this section is held to be invalid or unconstitutional, the 9 remaining parts of this section shall not be affected but will 10 remain in full force and effect. 11 Resolved further, That the foregoing amendment shall be sub- 12 mitted to the people of the state at the next general election in 13 the manner provided by law. 04831'97 Final page.
