SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION I


  April 17, 1997, Introduced by Senator A. SMITH and referred 
       to the Committee on Government Operations.
     


        A joint resolution proposing an amendment to the state con-

   stitution of 1963, by amending section 8 of article VIII, to

   change the term "handicapped" to "disabled".

        Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the

   state of Michigan, That the following amendment to the state con-

   stitution of 1963, to change the term "handicapped" to

   "disabled", is proposed, agreed to, and submitted to the people

   of the state:

 1                               ARTICLE VIII

 2         Sec. 8.  Institutions, programs, and services for the care,

 3    treatment, education, or rehabilitation of those inhabitants who

 4    are physically, mentally, or otherwise seriously 
             handicapped 

 5    DISABLED shall always be fostered and supported.

 1         Resolved further, That the foregoing amendment shall be

 2    submitted to the people of the state at the next general election

 3    in the manner provided by law.
