Rep. Penny Crissman, from the 45th District, offered the following invocation:
"Eternal and ever-present God, We sense with the passing of each day our need of You. God of all moments, be with us in this one. Humanity is Your idea. Help us to act like it. We are not here to pretend or deny. Give us the courage to face and to deal with our differences. Join with us as we celebrate and act upon that which unites us. In the mix, keep us hopeful pilgrims committed to integrity, dignity and direction. Above all else, Holy God, rescue us from mean-spiritedness so that together our state may become far more than just simply a place to live. Grant us wisdom and courage as we form the kinds of questions that would lead us to the best answers. God of our past, God of our present and God of our future, we thank You. Amen."

House Resolution No. 19.
A resolution to memorialize the Congress of the United States to protect Medicaid during considerations of the federal budget.
Whereas, In the past few years, our nation has made great strides in reducing the size of the deficit in the annual federal budget. Encouraged by this progress and the positive impact prudent federal spending policies have on all aspects of our economy, discussions in Washington are focusing on ways to bring the budget in balance for the first time in many years; and
Whereas, One of the distinguishing features of our nation has been our capacity as a society to provide some measure of help to the neediest among us. Over the past three decades, Medicaid has provided a safety net to help our poor, our disabled, and our disadvantaged seniors. This component of the federal budget should be distinct from the budget discussions, just as caring for the infirm and the impoverished should be removed from partisanship; and
Whereas, Medicaid provides a vital measure of security for all citizens in our country. Its impact extends far beyond the individuals who happen to benefit directly from its programs at a given time. All of us, either personally or through our families, may one day need to turn to Medicaid. The vast majority of our citizens are but a serious illness removed from needing help with medical services or nursing care. With the resources of this nation and the entire federal budget with which to work to achieve balanced spending, there are far more appropriate possibilities for reduction or changes than Medicaid; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we memorialize the Congress of the United States to protect Medicaid during considerations of the federal budget; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and the members of the Michigan congressional delegation.
The resolution was referred to the Committee on House Oversight and Ethics.
