A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILLS 4179 AND 4180 AS INTRODUCED 2-9-99
House Bill 4179 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code (MCL 257.310) to require any driver's or chauffeur's license to, where applicable, indicate that the license holder is a registered sex offender. This information would be in addition to the information that any license issued by the secretary of state must already contain.
House Bill 4180 would amend the Sex Offenders Registration Act (MCL 28.724 and 28.726) to inform a sex offender who must be registered under the act that his or her driver's license will indicate the fact that he or she is a registered sex offender. The probation officer or the family division of circuit court would have the duty to provide this information to any individual convicted of a crime that warranted his or her placement on the sex offender registry after October 1, 1995. The officer, court, or agency that registered the offender or that received or accepted the registration or a change of address notification would be required to forward the registration or notification to the secretary of state within three business days. The bill would also remove and update references to juvenile court and the Department of Social Services (now, the family division of circuit court and the Family Independence Agency, respectively).
The two bills are tie-barred; neither would take effect unless the other were also enacted.
