CAMPAIGN FINANCE COMPLAINTS:

"TIMELY" ACTION BY

SECRETARY OF STATE

House Bill 4272

Sponsor: Rep. Mickey Mortimer

Committee: Constitutional Law and Ethics

Complete to 3-30-99

A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4372 AS INTRODUCED 2-16-99

The bill would amend the Michigan Campaign Finance Act to require the secretary of state, upon receiving a complaint alleging a violation of the act, to determine within 45 days of receiving the complaint whether there was reason to believe that a violation had occurred. If the secretary of state determined there was no reason to believe that a violation of the act had occurred, he or she would have to ("promptly") so notify the person who made the complaint.
