A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4434 AS INTRODUCED 3-23-99

House Bill 4434 would amend the Revised School Code to require that not later than August 1, 1999, the State Board of Education review the mathematics content standards and revise the standards to ensure that they are identical or similar to the mathematics standards adopted by the California State Board of Education and currently in effect in that state.

[Under current law, in order for its schools to be accredited, a school district's board of education must provide a core academic curriculum to all students. To that end, the State Board of Education is required to develop and periodically update recommended model core academic curriculum content standards for adoption by the public school districts. The recommended content standards set forth the desired learning objectives in math, science, reading, history, geography, economics, American government, and writing for all children at each stage of schooling. In Michigan, the recommended model core is based on the Michigan K-12 Program Standards of Quality which ensure that high academic standards, academic skills, and academic subject matters are built into the instructional goals of all school districts for. In addition, the recommended model core forms the basis of the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP), including the High School Test, the results of which are used to endorse a high school graduate's transcript. The MEAP assesses students' knowledge of the model core in reading and mathematics at grades 4, 7, and 11; and of science, writing, and social studies in grades 5,8, and 11.]
