A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4805 AS INTRODUCED 6-17-99

House Bill 4805 would amend the Motor Fuels Quality Act to eliminate the ethanol labeling requirement at fuel pumps. Under the act, a retail dealer cannot sell gasoline in Michigan unless the pump dispensing the gas is posted with a notice that indicates the grade of gasoline and the additives in the gasoline.

Specifically, House Bill 4805 would remove the following labeling requirement: If gasoline contains at least one percent alcohol by volume, the notice shall state: "Contains (indicate the type of alcohol such as ethanol or methanol, and if methanol the label shall state 'alcohol: methanol', followed in the same size type, by the concentration to the nearest whole percent)". However, if the gasoline contains alcohols or ethers that have a molecular weight greater than ethanol and are not mixed with methanol or ethanol, or both, these alcohols or ethers are not subject to the notice requirements of this section.
