A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4848 AS INTRODUCED 9-23-99

In order to be eligible for Medicaid, a person must meet certain standards described in the Social Welfare Act (MCL 400.106). The person must be eligible to receive Family Independence Agency (FIA) program benefits or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), under Title XVI of the federal Social Security Act, or state supplementation under Title XVI. The person must also meet certain asset standards. However, up to $1,000 of life insurance is excluded from these restrictions. House Bill 4848 would increase this exemption to $10,000. The bill would also delete archaic language and make technical amendments to the act.
