A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5253 AS INTRODUCED 2-1-00


House Bill 5253 would amend the State School Aid Act to increase the amount of funding available to school districts for early childhood school readiness grants. The grants generally are used in conjunction with federal funds to offer programs that are designed to improve the achievement of educationally disadvantaged children. Currently under the law there is allocated an amount not to exceed $55 million each fiscal year for 1998-1999, 1999-2000, and 2000-2001. Under the bill there would be allocated an amount not to exceed $55 million for 1998-1999 and an amount not to exceed $60 million each fiscal year for 1999-2000 and 2000-2001.
