A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5757 AS INTRODUCED 5-9-00

Under the Fire Fighters and Police Officers Retirement Act, the surviving spouse of a fire fighter or police officer who dies is eligible to receive a duty death pension, continuing throughout the surviving spouse's life or until he or she remarries. The bill would amend this provision to delete the reference to remarriage, so that a surviving spouse's duty death pension benefit would continue for the person's lifetime, despite remarriage.
