A SUMMARY OF HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION U AS INTRODUCED 6-20-00


The joint resolution would amend the state constitution to require voter approval of new local taxes. More specifically, the joint resolution would amend Article IX, Section 31 of the 1963 state constitution to require that local tax increases be approved by at least one-third of the qualified electors of the local unit of government. The resolution would be placed on the ballot at the next general election.
