Senate Bill 51 (as introduced 1-26-99)
Sponsor: Senator Ken Sikkema
Committee: Government Operations
Date Completed: 2-18-99
CONTENT
The bill would amend the Michigan Election Law to change the date of the statewide presidential primary election from the third Tuesday in March to the second Tuesday in February in each presidential election year.
The bill provides that it could not take effect until the following requirements were met:
-- The Michigan Democratic Party received written notification from the Democratic National Committee that the current national committee rules that do not recognize the results of an open presidential primary for allocating delegates were waived for the Michigan Democratic Party.
-- The Michigan Democratic Party filed a copy of the written notification with the Secretary of State by November 1 of the year immediately preceding a year in which a presidential primary election was to be held.
The bill would take effect 10 days after the date on which the written notification was filed with the Secretary of State.
