USE OF MERCURY IN SCHOOLS - S.B. 1262: FLOOR ANALYSIS

Senate Bill 1262 (as reported without amendment)

Sponsor: Senator Shirley Johnson

Committee: Education

CONTENT

The bill would amend the Revised School Code to require the board of a school district, local act school district, or intermediate school district (ISD) or board of directors of a public school academy to ensure that after December 31, 2004, the school district, ISD, or public school academy did not use mercury, compounds or substances that contained mercury or had a mercury content, or equipment, supplies, or products that contained mercury or had a mercury content.

After December 31, 2004, if no reasonably acceptable, mercury-free alternative existed for a compound or substance or for equipment, supplies, or products used by a school district, ISD, or public school academy, then the district or academy could use the compound or substance or equipment, supply, or product that contained the lowest mercury content available on the market.
