BOARD OF DENTISTRY - H.B. 5682: FLOOR ANALYSIS
House Bill 5682 (as reported without amendment)
Sponsor: Representative Steve Vear
House Committee: Health Policy
Senate Committee: Health Policy
CONTENT
The bill would amend the Public Health Code to increase the Michigan Board of Dentistry from 15 to 19 members, as follows:
-- Eight members, rather than seven, would have to be dentists. As currently allowed, one or more of these members could have a health profession specialty certification.
-- Two (as currently required) would have to be dentists who had been issued a health profession specialty certification.
-- Four, rather than two, would have to be dental hygienists.
-- Two (as currently required) would have to be dental assistants.
-- Three, rather than two, would have to be public members.
The Code states that not more than one member of the board may be a dental school faculty member. The bill indicates that this limitation would apply to the provisions requiring dentists to be board members.
A dentist, dental hygienist, public member, or other individual who was a member of the board on the bill's effective date could serve out his or her term.
Presently, board meeting dates and times must be concurred in by a vote of at least 12 members. The bill would increase that to 13.
