        A bill to amend 1990 PA 187, entitled

   "The pupil transportation act,"

   by amending section 35 (MCL 257.1835).

               THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

           Sec. 35.  (1) A school bus shall be marked as required by

 2
      department of education standards for school bus markings and

 3
      operational procedures available from the department of education

 4
      at no cost.  As an exception to these standards, animal pictures,

 5
      cartoon figures, and similar insignia may be affixed to the bus

 6
      in a temporary manner near the entrance door, but not closer than

 7
      the second window, to assist in identifying the bus route.

           (2) AFTER DECEMBER 31, 2000, EACH SCHOOL BUS MANUFACTURED

 9
      FOR USE OR USED IN THIS STATE SHALL INCLUDE A SIGN ON THE BACK OF

      THE BUS STATING "IT IS A CIVIL FINE OF NOT MORE THAN $500.00 TO

      PASS THIS VEHICLE WHEN THE RED LIGHTS ARE FLASHING.".

           Enacting section 1.  This amendatory act does not take

      effect unless Senate Bill No. _____ or House Bill No. 5860
