A bill to amend 1953 PA 232, entitled "An act to revise, consolidate, and codify the laws relating to probationers and probation officers, to pardons, reprieves, com- mutations, and paroles, to the administration of correctional institutions, correctional farms, and probation recovery camps, to prisoner labor and correctional industries, and to the super- vision and inspection of local jails and houses of correction; to provide for the siting of correctional facilities; to create a state department of corrections, and to prescribe its powers and duties; to provide for the transfer to and vesting in said department of powers and duties vested by law in certain other state boards, commissions, and officers, and to abolish certain boards, commissions, and offices the powers and duties of which are transferred by this act; to allow for the operation of cer- tain facilities by private entities; to prescribe the powers and duties of certain other state departments and agencies; to pro- vide for the creation of a local lockup advisory board; to pre- scribe penalties for the violation of the provisions of this act; to make certain appropriations; to repeal certain parts of this act on specific dates; and to repeal all acts and parts of acts inconsistent with the provisions of this act," by amending section 31 (MCL 791.231), as amended by 1982 PA 314. THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT: 06652'00 JJG 2 1 Sec. 31. (1) There is established within the department a 2 bureau of field services OPERATIONS, under the direction and 3 supervision of a deputy director in charge of field services 4 OPERATIONS, who shall be appointed by the director and who shall 5 be within the state civil service. The deputy director shall 6 direct and supervise the work of the bureau of field services 7 OPERATIONS and shall formulate methods of investigation and 8 supervision and develop various processes in the technique of 9 supervision by the parole staff. The deputy director is respon- 10 sible for all investigations of persons eligible for release from 11 state penal institutions, CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES and for the 12 general supervision of persons released from penal institutions 13 STATE CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES. The deputy director in charge of 14 the bureau of field services OPERATIONS is responsible for the 15 collection and preservation of records and statistics with 16 respect to paroled prisoners as may be required by the director 17 and the chairperson of the parole board. The deputy director 18 shall employ parole officers and assistants as may be necessary, 19 subject to the approval of the director. The deputy director 20 shall select secretarial and other assistants as may be necessary 21 and may obtain permanent quarters for the staff as may be 22 necessary. 23 (2) UPON THE REQUEST OF A PAROLE OFFICER EMPLOYED BY THE 24 DEPARTMENT, IT IS THE DUTY OF EACH SHERIFF AND EACH CHIEF POLICE 25 OFFICER OF A CITY, VILLAGE, TOWNSHIP, COLLEGE, OR UNIVERSITY TO 26 DELIVER ALL POLICE REPORTS NECESSARY FOR THE PAROLE OFFICER TO 06652'00 3 1 CARRY OUT HIS OR HER DUTIES.
