SENATE BILL NO. 723 September 22, 1999, Introduced by Senator JAYE and referred to the Committee on Education. A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," by amending section 1151 (MCL 380.1151); and to repeal acts and parts of acts. THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT: 1 Sec. 1151. (1) English shall be the basic language of 2 instruction in the public and nonpublic schools of this state and 3 in state institutions. A PUBLIC SCHOOL SHALL NOT PROVIDE ANY 4 KIND OF BILINGUAL INSTRUCTION. 5 (2) Subsection (1)shall not be construed as applying to6 DOES NOT APPLY TO EITHER OF THE FOLLOWING: 7 (a) Religious instruction in a nonpublic school given in a 8 foreign language in addition to the regular course of study. 04209'99 TAV 2 1 (b) A course of instruction in a foreign language in which 2 the pupil acquires sufficient proficiency to be conversant in the 3 foreign language. 4(c) Bilingual instruction, as defined in section 1152,5which will assist children of limited English-speaking ability to6achieve reasonable efficiency in the English language.7 Enacting section 1.
