A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4961 AS INTRODUCED 6-14-01

House Bill 4961 would amend the Insurance Code (MCL 500.3406q) to require that certain insurers provide coverage for at least 48 hours of inpatient hospital services following a mastectomy and at least 24 hours of inpatient hospital services following a lymph node dissection. The bill would apply to any insurer that delivered, issued for delivery, or renewed in the state an expense-incurred hospital, medical, or surgical policy or certificate providing mastectomy or lymph node dissection coverage for the treatment of breast cancer. The insurer would have to provide prominent written notice to customers about the required coverage in the first mailing to the customer after the effective date of the bill or on January 1, 2002, whichever was earlier.
