House Bill 5154

Sponsor: Rep. Andy Neumann

Committee: Criminal Justice

Complete to 2-15-02

A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5154 AS INTRODUCED 10-9-01

The Michigan Penal Code prohibits a person from 1) assaulting, beating, harassing, or injuring (or attempting any of these acts) or 2) willfully and maliciously impeding or interfering with (or attempting the same) a guide or leader dog for an individual who is blind, a hearing dog for the deaf or audibly impaired, or a service dog for a physically limited individual. A person who violates this law is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by not more than 90 days in jail or a fine of not more than $500, or both.

House Bill 5154 would amend the code to increase the maximum imprisonment to 180 days and increase the maximum fine to $2,000.
