A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5567 AS INTRODUCED 1-22-01

House Bill 5567 would amend the Revised School Code to require that school boards (including the boards of local act districts and intermediate districts), and public school academy boards of directors ensure all of the following in their schools:

-that the pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States, or the U.S. national anthem, be offered each school day in at least grades 1 to 8; and,

-that the pledge of allegiance or the national anthem be offered at all after-school events, including but not limited to, all interscholastic athletic events, in at least grades 9 to 12.

The bill specifies that a student would not be compelled to recite the pledge or sing the anthem against the student's objections, or the objections of the student's parent or legal guardian.
