A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5571 AS INTRODUCED 1-22-02

House Bill 5571 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to establish that individuals using mobility aids while crossing the street would have the right-of-way.

Under the bill, the driver of a vehicle who approached a pedestrian crosswalk would be required to stop and yield the right-of-way to any individual crossing the street who was using a wheelchair, scooter, walker, crutches, or other mobility aid. A driver who violated this provision would be responsible for a civil infraction. Further, the bill specifies that the driver would be liable in damages for any injury caused to the individual using a mobility aid while in the crosswalk.
