A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5589 AS INTRODUCED 2-5-02
House Bill 5589 would create a new act to allow an employee to display the American flag in his or her work area, if the display did not pose a safety hazard.
The bill would define "safety hazard" to mean that in the judgment of the employer, there is a violation, or a condition that may cause a violation, of the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Act. Under the bill, "employer" would be defined to mean an individual, sole proprietorship, partnership, association, or corporation, public or private; the state or an agency of the state; a city, county, village, township, school district, or intermediate school district; an institution of higher education; or an individual acting directly or indirectly in the interest of the employer who employs one or more individuals.
