A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5762 AS INTRODUCED 2-28-02
House Bill 5762 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to allow a city, county, village, or township to enact an ordinance that prescribes levels of sound produced by a radio, stereo, or other electronic sound equipment in a motor vehicle. Currently, the code regulates vehicle noise levels by requiring that vehicles have exhaust systems that are in good working order and by setting decibel levels that vary depending on the type and speed of the vehicle. The code also describes acceptable test procedures and sets penalties for violation of the sections governing noise levels. Further, the code prohibits a local unit of government from adopting or enforcing vehicle noise rules unless the rules are identical to the requirements of the code.
