A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5974 AS INTRODUCED 4-30-02
House Bill 5974 would amend the Revised School Code to eliminate the five-year waiting period for the election that would determine the continuation of the Detroit school reform board, and instead would schedule that election during the August 2002 primary.
Currently under the law, the appointment of the Detroit school reform board members expires five years after their initial appointment, and the question of whether to retain that board and the chief executive officer, as well as the authority to appoint the board and the CEO, will be placed on the ballot at the next November general election that occurs at least 90 days after the five-year initial appointment period ends. House Bill 5974 would eliminate the five-year waiting period and specify, instead, that the question of whether to continue the reform board, as well as the authority to appoint the reform board, be placed on the ballot at the August 2002 primary election in Detroit.
