A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 6518 AS INTRODUCED 11-7-02

House Bill 6518 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to increase the penalties a driver would incur for driving on a suspended license. Currently under the law, a person who knowingly drives with a suspended, revoked, or denied driver's license is guilty of a misdemeanor. If a first violation, then the unlicensed driver can be punished by imprisonment for not more than 93 days, or a fine of not more than $500, or both. If a second violation, the unlicensed driver can be punished by imprisonment for not more than one year or a fine of not more than $1,000, or both. Under the bill, a first violation would be punished by imprisonment of not more than 180 days or a fine of not more than $1,000, or both; and a second violation by imprisonment of not more than one year or a fine of not more than $2,000 or both, and in addition, the court would be required to order the vehicle operated by the convicted person to be immobilized for 90 days.
