NURSING HOME NAMES - S.B. 525 (S-1): FLOOR ANALYSIS

Senate Bill 525 (Substitute S-1 as reported)

Sponsor: Senator Dale L. Shugars

Committee: Health Policy

CONTENT

The bill would amend the Public Health Code to allow a nursing home to use the following in its name: "health center", "health care center", or "rehabilitation center", or a term that conveyed a meaning substantially similar to those terms, as long as the term did not conflict with those prohibited by the Code.

Under the Code, a nursing home is prohibited from using a name that includes the term "hospital", "sanitarium", or "rehabilitation center", or a term conveying a meaning substantially similar to those words. The bill would remove the term "rehabilitation center" from the list of prohibited terms. If a nursing home used the term "rehabilitation center" in its name, the nursing home would have to have the capacity to provide rehabilitation services that included, at a minimum, physical, occupational, and speech therapy services.
