DOMESTIC VIOLENCE REPORTS - S.B. 720: COMMITTEE SUMMARY

Senate Bill 720 (as introduced 10-17-01)

Sponsor: Senator Mike Goschka

Committee: Judiciary

Date Completed: 10-30-01

CONTENT

The bill would amend the uniform crime reporting Act to expand the domestic violence information that a police chief or sheriff must report to the Department of State Police.

The Act requires city, village, and township chiefs of police and county sheriffs to report to the Department, in a manner prescribed by the Department, certain information related to "crimes of domestic assault". The bill would refer, instead, to "domestic violence incidents". The Act requires police chiefs and sheriffs to report the number of all of the following assaults reported and their disposition:

-- Assaults that involve an adult and a minor.

-- Assaults that involve two male adults or two female adults.

-- Assaults that involve one male adult and one female adult.

-- Assaults that involve a person and his or her spouse. The bill would refer to the number of "crimes" rather than "assaults", and would include a former spouse.

The bill would add all of the following to the information that police chiefs and sheriffs must report:

-- The number of crimes that involved an individual and a person with whom he or she had a child in common.

-- The number of crimes that involved an individual and a resident or former resident of his or her household.

-- The number of crimes that involved an individual and a person with whom he or she had a dating relationship.
