CONTENT


The bill would amend the Revised Judicature Act to eliminate one district judgeship each in the City of Highland Park and the City of Hamtramck.


The 30th Judicial District consists of the City of Highland Park, is a district of the third class, and currently has two judges. Under the bill, the 30th District would have one judge beginning on the earlier of the following:


-- The date on which a vacancy occurred in the office of district judge in the 30th District.

-- Noon on January 1, 2003.


The 31st Judicial District consists of the City of Hamtramck, is a district of the third class, and has two judges. Under the bill, the 31st District would have one judge.


The bill is tie-barred to Senate Bills 76 and 763 through 766, which would revise the number of judgeships in various judicial circuits and districts.

FISCAL IMPACT


Based on 2002 judicial salaries, the State would realize the following savings form each eliminated district judgeship:


Salary $138,272
Social Security/Medicare 7,269
Defined Contribution Retirement 9,679
Total $155,220

Local savings would depend on the amount contributed by the local funding unit for judicial benefits and support staff costs.
