A bill to amend 1953 PA 181, entitled "An act relative to investigations in certain instances of the causes of death within this state due to violence, negligence or other act or omission of a criminal nature or to protect public health; to provide for the taking of statements from injured per- sons under certain circumstances; to abolish the office of coro- ner and to create the office of county medical examiner in cer- tain counties; to prescribe the powers and duties of county medi- cal examiners; to prescribe penalties for violations of the pro- visions of this act; and to prescribe a referendum thereon," by amending section 1 (MCL 52.201). THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT: 1 Sec. 1. (1) The board of supervisors COMMISSIONERS of 2 each county of this state shall by resolution abolish the office 3 of coroner , and appoint a county medical examiner to hold 4 office for a period of 4 years. Should IF the office of county 5 medical examiner become BECOMES vacant before the expiration of 6 the term of office, the board of supervisors COMMISSIONERS may 7 appoint a successor to complete the term of office. In counties 05044'01 FDD 2 1 having WITH a civil service system, the appointment and tenure 2 of the medical examiner shall be made in accordance with the pro- 3 visions thereof OF THAT CIVIL SERVICE SYSTEM. 4 (2) County medical examiners shall be physicians licensed to 5 practice within the THIS state. and shall be residents of the 6 county for which they are appointed or of a neighboring county. 7 (3) Two or more adjoining counties, by resolution of the 8 respective boards of supervisors thereof COMMISSIONERS, may 9 enter into common AN agreement to employ the same person to act 10 as medical examiner for all of the counties. 05044'01 Final page.
