ALTERNATE DATES FOR LOCAL BOARDS OF REVIEW

House Bill 4211

Sponsor: Rep. Bruce Caswell

Committee: Tax Policy

Complete to 3-14-03

A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4211 AS INTRODUCED 2-13-03

The General Property Tax Act spells out the required meeting times of local boards of review to hear property tax protests from taxpayers. Local boards of review are required to meet on the second Monday in March starting no earlier than 9 a.m. or later than 3 p.m. and must meet for at least six hours on that day. The board must also meet for at least six hours during the remainder of the week. The board further is required to hold at least three hours of its required sessions during the week after 6 p.m.

House Bill 4211 would allow the governing body of a city or township to authorize alternative starting dates in March for the board of review's initial meeting, which could be either the Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday following the first Tuesday in March. The alternative date for the initial meeting would have to be authorized by adoption of an ordinance or resolution.
