A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 6173 AS INTRODUCED 9-9-04

The bill, which is part of a multi-bill package addressing the crime of identity theft, would amend the Crime Victim’s Rights Act to establish the right of a victim of identity theft to obtain a police report from a law enforcement agency in a jurisdiction where the alleged crime could be prosecuted as provided by provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure that would be added by House Bill 6170 or Senate Bill 793.

“Identity theft” is defined in the Identity Theft Protection Act which would be created by House Bill 6168 and Senate Bill 792.

The bill is tie-barred to Senate Bill 794.

FISCAL IMPACT:

House Bill 6173 would have an indeterminate fiscal impact on local law enforcement agencies, depending on the numbers and length of police reports requested.
