A SUMMARY OF HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION U AS INTRODUCED 1-22-04
The resolution would add Section 25 to Article I of the state constitution to only recognize marriages that are entered into between one man and one woman, in order “to secure and preserve the benefits of marriage for our society and for future generations of children”. The joint resolution says that no other relationship would be recognized as a marriage or its legal equivalent by the state, political subdivisions, or educational institutions, regardless of whether such a relationship is recognized by the laws of a jurisdiction outside of the state.
The proposed constitutional amendment would be put before the voters at the next general election.
