BALLOT INSTRUCTIONS: ASSISTANCE - S.B. name="1">350: COMMITTEE SUMMARYSenate Bill 350 (as introduced 3-27-03)

Sponsor: Senator Cameron S. Brown

Committee: Government Operations

Date Completed: 4-29-03

CONTENT

The bill would amend the Michigan Election Law to require that the following statement be added to the printed instructions on an official ballot:

“If you do not understand the ballot or need assistance, you may ask an election official for assistance. An election official is required to provide voters with assistance upon request. If you believe you have made a mistake in voting your ballot, you may return your spoiled ballot to an election official and the election official shall provide you with a new ballot.”

Currently, the Election Law prescribes the content of the ballot instructions, and requires the instructions to be printed in large type on cards that must be conspicuously displayed in polling places. The bill would require that the cards also include the added instructions.

The bill would apply to any primary, general, or special election.
