Committee: Economic Development, Small Business and Regulatory Reform
CONTENT
The bill would amend Article 8 of the Occupational Code, which regulates boxing, sparing, and wrestling, to require the promoter of a boxing elimination contest, or a boxing or sparing match or exhibition, to insure contestants for at least $50,000 for medical and hospital expenses.
Article 8 requires a promoter to insure a contestant in a boxing elimination contest (commonly known as a toughman contest) for all medical and hospital expenses to be paid to contestants to cover injuries sustained in a contest. Currently, no minimum dollar amount of insurance is required. A contestant in a boxing or sparing match or exhibition must be insured by the promoter for at least $1,000 for medical and hospital expenses. In addition, a promoter of a boxing match or exhibition between professionals must insure each contestant, but no dollar amount is specified. The bill would require insurance for at least $50,000 in each of these situations.
