CONTENT

The bill would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to increase the penalty for illegally parking in a space for the disabled. The bill would take effect on October 1, 2003.

Under the Code, a person who parks illegally in a space reserved for persons with disabilities is responsible for a civil infraction and must pay a fine of between $50 and $100, in addition to the plaintiff’s costs in connection with the action. The bill would increase the fine to a minimum of $100 and a maximum of $250.

(Under the Code, a parking space reserved for the disabled must be clearly identified by an official sign, and a person must display a registration plate or placard attesting to disability in order to park there.)
