House Bill 6003 (Substitute H-1 as reported without amendment)
Sponsor: Representative Scott Hummel
House Committee: Local Government and Urban Policy
Senate Committee: Government Operations
CONTENT
The bill would amend the Michigan Election Law to require a county clerk to announce the result of an election to recall a person holding a nonpartisan office or a school board member. The bill also would revise the time for a candidate for the vacated office to file a petition or pay a fee.
Under the bill, the clerk of the county in which a recall petition was filed would be required to announce publicly the official result of the recall election at the conclusion of the meeting held by the board of county canvassers to certify the recall election. A candidate would have to file a nominating petition or pay a fee by 4 p.m. on the 15th day after the clerk made the announcement. (Presently, a candidate must file a petition or pay the fee by 4 p.m. on the 15th day after the special election to fill the vacancy is called.)
