SUBSTITUTE FOR
SENATE BILL NO. 337
A bill to amend 1917 PA 167, entitled
"Housing law of Michigan,"
(MCL 125.401 to 125.543) by adding section 82a.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
1 Sec. 82a. (1) Each dwelling unit contained within a class
2 "A" multiple dwelling shall be equipped with a single-station or
3 multiple-station smoke alarm that complies with the standards set
4 forth in the state construction code promulgated under section 4c
5 of the Stille-DeRossett-Hale single state construction code act,
6 1972 PA 230, MCL 125.1504c.
7 (2) A class "A" multiple dwelling constructed before November
8 6, 1974 has 1 year after the effective date of the rules
9 promulgated under section 4c of the Stille-DeRossett-Hale single
10 state construction code act, 1972 PA 230, MCL 125.1504c, to
11 comply with subsection (1).
1 (3) An existing building that is converted to a class "A"
2 multiple dwelling shall comply with the requirements that may be
3 imposed by the Stille-DeRossett-Hale single state construction
4 code act, 1972 PA 230, MCL 125.1501 to 125.1531.
5 (4) A person owning a class "A" multiple dwelling shall
6 comply with this section.
7 (5) A person who violates this section is guilty of a
8 misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not more than $500.00 or
9 imprisonment of not more than 90 days, or both.
10 (6) As used in this section:
11 (a) "Dwelling unit" means a single unit providing complete
12 independent living facilities for 1 or more persons, including
13 permanent provisions for cooking, living, sanitation, and
14 sleeping.
15 (b) "Smoke alarm" means a single-station or multiple-station
16 alarm responsive to smoke and not connected to a system.
17 (c) "Single-station smoke alarm" means an assembly
18 incorporating a detector, the control equipment, and the alarm
19 sounding device into 1 unit, operated from a power supply either
20 in the unit or obtained at the point of installation.
21 (d) "Multiple-station smoke alarm" means 2 or more
22 single-station alarm devices that are capable of interconnection
23 such that actuation of 1 causes all integral or separate audible
24 alarms to operate.
25 Enacting section 1. This amendatory act does not take
26 effect unless Senate Bill No. ____ or House Bill No. ____
27 (request no. 04012'03) of the 92nd Legislature is enacted into
1 law.
