            House Resolution No. 83.

            A resolution honoring the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on its 90th anniversary.

            Whereas, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913, and this year it is celebrating its 90th anniversary; and

            Whereas, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is built on a legacy of character, strength and service with a membership of 200,000 college educated women and over 887 chapters worldwide; and

            Whereas, The Kalamazoo Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., was activated on June 23, 1973, at the Alma Powell Branch Library; and

            Whereas, The women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority believe in public service.  They serve as congresswomen, state legislators, mayors, city council members, county commissioners, administrators, educators and on numerous judicial boards, school boards and commissions.  The women from the Kalamazoo Alumnae Chapter can also be found as elected officials, judges, social workers, teachers, college professors and school board members; and

            Whereas, The women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority have participated in the HIV/AIDS Awareness and International Day of Service.  The members of the Kalamazoo Alumnae Chapter participated in Delta Days at the Capitol in Lansing; and

            Whereas, The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., has partnered with the National Council of Women to develop initiatives focusing on education with an emphasis on intervention in the early grades; and

            Whereas, Delta Sigma Theta’s new initiative is the Science and Everyday Experiences Program funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.  This program is designed to encourage young girls to pursue math, science, engineering and technology.  The women of the Kalamazoo Alumnae Chapter, in keeping with the national agenda focus on education, have served as mentors to young ladies.  They initiated the Delta Academy for middle school girls in 2002; now, therefore, be it

            Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body honor Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on its 90th anniversary and the Kalamazoo Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., for giving back to their community for over 30 years.
