A SUMMARY OF SENATE BILL 624 AS REPORTED BY HOUSE COMMITTEE

The bill would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to name the following highways:

** Highway US-24 in Wayne County would be known as the "10th Mountain Division Memorial Highway."

** Highway M-3 in Macomb County from its intersection with Harrington Boulevard and continuing north to its end would be known as the "Ronald W. Reagan Memorial Highway."

Senate Bill 624 would not take effect unless House Bill 4718 is also enacted.  House Bill 4718, as passed by the Senate, would name the following highways:

** Highway M-54 in Genesee County from its intersection with I-75 north to its intersection with I-69 would be known as the "UAW Sitdown Strike Memorial Highway;" and

** Highway M-54 in Genesee County from its intersection with I-69 north to its intersection with M-57 the "Marine Corps League Memorial Highway."

HOUSE COMMITTEE ACTION:

The House Committee on Transportation reported Senate Bill 624 without amendments.  For information on the 10th Mountain Division, see the analysis of the bill by the Senate Fiscal Agency dated 11-9-05 on the Michigan Legislature website.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Section 2 of Public Act 142 indicates that the state transportation department shall only provide for the erection of suitable markers indicating the name of the highway "when sufficient private contributions are received to completely cover the cost of erecting and maintaining those markers."  As a result, the bill has no state or local fiscal impact.
